The art of the modern grand tour

A great driving holiday is not about distance. It is about choreography, the order of the roads, the timing of the light, the hotel that appears exactly when you need it. Done well, a week behind the wheel through the mountains feels less like a road trip and more like a film you happen to be starring in. Here is how we compose one.

Choose the road first, the route second

Amateurs plan from A to B. We plan around the three or four roads that are genuinely worth the drive, a particular pass at first light, a corniche at golden hour, and build the rest of the itinerary so you meet each one at its finest moment. The hotels exist to position you for the next great stretch of tarmac.

Drive less than you think

The most common mistake is too much driving and too little arriving. Three to four hours behind the wheel is plenty for one day; the remainder is for the long lunch, the unhurried check-in, the swim before dinner. A grand tour should leave you more rested than when you set off, not less.

The best days have one extraordinary drive and one extraordinary dinner, and nothing else demanding your attention.

The car is part of the cast

Through Suite Ride, the machine is chosen as carefully as the route. A front-engined grand tourer for the long, flowing passes; something lighter and louder for the technical sections. We handle delivery, collection and every practicality, so the only decision you make each morning is the roof, up, or down.

Book the table before the room

A region's finest restaurant is often harder to secure than its finest suite. We reverse the usual order: the dinners are reserved first, and the route is shaped to deliver you to each one, unhurried and on time. It is a small inversion that changes everything.

Leave room for the unplanned

Every great tour has a day with no plan at all, the morning you wake, look at the map, and simply follow the most interesting line on it. We build that freedom in deliberately, with a team on call should the spontaneous require a little quiet assistance.

Where to begin

The Alps and Dolomites are the classic canvas; the French and Italian Rivieras the romantic one. But the principles travel anywhere there is a beautiful road and a reason to stop. Tell us how you like to drive, and we will compose the rest.
